PACKING A STORAGE SPACE

At Lock Box Storage, we want you to have a great storage experience and get the most out of your storage space. Choosing the right space and packing it for optimal storage capacity and convenience is very important. Here are some tips from our storage experts that will help!

Before you move, get organized. Decide exactly what will be going into storage. It might be helpful to make a list, or even take pictures. Photos will also come in handy to provide to your insurance agent. This process will help you determine what size space you need, how many boxes you should purchase, if you need to rent a truck and other important pre-moving day decisions.

Think about the future. What is going to happen after you pack up your unit when you come back to retrieve things? You’ll want to make sure that everything is labeled, but you’ll also want to make sure that you have easy access to the things you’re going to need. If you’re keeping seasonal clothes, for instance, you’ll probably want those near the door since you’re going to need to get to those regularly. You’ll also want to make sure you leave yourself an aisle to maneuver between your boxes so you can access everything. Depending on the size of your unit, stack boxes around the perimeter and leave space in the middle, or leave walkways between the rows of boxes. Turn box labels to face the aisle. It makes it much easier to read the labels and notes you’ve written on the boxes.

Label everything. You may think you’ll remember what’s in that second brown box that you pack up by just writing “Clothes” on it. But what happens when you get to “Clothes #4″ and next winter you have to dig through 4 boxes to find your favorite sweater? Better to be as specific as possible. Separate clothes by season and family member if possible. It will be easier to access that winter coat for Mom if the box is clearly marked. It is also very important to mark all boxes containing fragile and breakable items so that you do not stack heavy boxes on top or mishandle while packing the space. Separating household items by room is helpful, but here again, be specific. If you simply label a box as kitchen, there could be a mulitude of items that fit in this category. Labels such as pot and pans, coffee maker, etc will help you locate items quickly.

Weatherproof. A dark enclosed space, depending on the climate of your storage unit, can breed a lot of things, mainly moisture. It’s smart to leave space between your boxes and the walls of the unit to minimize condensation and promote air circulation. Laying down plastic on the floor or using pallets to keep your boxes off the floor will also prevent damage from moisture.

Fill your boxes to the top. Not only to save space in your unit but also because boxes with empty space at the top have a tendency to collapse under the weight of boxes stacked on top of them. Caution: Be sure not to put too many heavy things in one box. The box may break and will be very difficult to lift and move if it is too heavy.

Take security precautions. Even though Lock Box Storage provides security features, you can be extra safe by storing expensive items farther from the door, behind boxes or other large items so that they are not visible from the entrance to your unit.

What Should or Should Not Be Stored in a Self Storage Unit?

Self-storage is an excellent option for storing overflow of many different types of materials from your home or business. You can think of your storage unit as a second garage or business supply room.

When planning what to store in your unit, whether for business or personal purposes, consider that all storage facilities have restrictions on what they will allow you to store on their premises. This is for the protection of not just you and your belongings, but the facility staff and other customers and their goods. You will be required to sign a lease indicating that you understand and agree to adhere to the rules and restrictions for what items are allowable. As a general rule, any item or material that is considered “inherently dangerous” will not be allowed.

In preparation for renting a storage unit, make out a preliminary inventory of the items you wish to store. Bring this with you to review with our storage experts to make sure you’ll be in full compliance with the list of allowable items. Full disclosure of what you will be storing is required. Or, if you’re not sure if an item is allowed, call the self-storage facility ahead of time to find out. This will prevent any related inconvenience upon arriving at the storage site.

Here is a list of common item restrictions and limits:

Combustible, Flammable, Hazardous or Toxic Materials

Absolutely no combustible, flammable, hazardous, or toxic materials may be stored in a self-storage unit.  Considered “inherently dangerous,” these include but not limited to gasoline, compressed gas, propane tanks, kerosene, lamp and motor oil, acid, grease, corrosives, fertilizer, paint, cleaners, chemicals, narcotics, toxic/hazardous/biological waste, fireworks, explosives, weapons or ammunition. Asbestos or products containing asbestos are not allowed.

Perishable Food and Animal Products

No perishables of any kind are allowed to be stored in a self storage unit.  That includes but not limited to food stuffs and animal products.

Vehicles and Tires

Vehicles stored in parking spaces must have inflated tires.  Truck-beds, unenclosed trailers and boats must be empty and clear of debris.  No more than four tires may be stored in a storage unit.

Medical/Pharmaceutical Supplies & Equipment

No radioactive materials or equipment is permitted.  Any medical equipment or material that is deemed combustible, flammable, hazardous, or toxic may not be stored.

Construction Equipment

Most construction equipment is acceptable.  Please check with our facility before storing any construction equipment.  For example, equipment used to locate underground water, is not permitted.

Miscellaneous Prohibited Items

Any animals or plants – alive or dead – cannot be stored.

No stolen items.

It is prohibited to use power from the facility to operate any equipment or electrical devices.  This includes but not limited to refrigerators, freezers, space heaters, and generators.

No one is permitted to live in or stay in a storage unit for a prolonged period of time.
